History of the Little York Congregation
Little York has its roots from the church that originally met on Cordell Street in the Heights area of Houston. In the summer of 1965 the members of the Cordell Street Church of Christ decided to relocate the church to the growing northwest area of Houston.
A location along the highway 290 corridor was sought and in December 1965 land was purchased in the vicinity of the West Loop and Highway 290. This was intended to be the new home of the Dow Acres Church of Christ. But God had another location for the church. Objections from area residents would not permit the construction of a church building at the Dow Acres location. So a new site was sought and found further west along the Highway 290 corridor.
Early in 1966 two acres along Little York Road were purchased and the construction of a church building was begun. The location was undeveloped and contained a "pond" since it had once been pasture for horses and cows. Construction of the building proved to be a challenge since the ground remained muddy much of the time. Cement trucks had to be "towed" in and out of the lot because they became buried so deeply in the mud. Much of the inside construction of the church building was performed by members of the church usually under the direction and supervision of Brother Archie Sciba ( a long time member of the congregation).
While the new building was being constructed, the property at Cordell Street had been sold, so the Church began meeting at the YMCA on the North Loop. This arrangement continued for a month and then the Church met in the home of James and Floy Jackson in the Spring Branch area. In August 1966 the church building was completed enough that Sunday worship was held there.
On May 2, 1966 the church was incorporated under Texas law and became known as the Little York Church of Christ. And on Sunday, September 3, 1966 Little York Church of Christ had its Grand Opening. On that Sunday there were nine families present with a total attendance of 35.
The congregation had a slow but steady growth during the subsequent years. As the congregation grew in number it became more difficult to find places for special events like Sunday dinners and other fellowship activities. So in November 1978 the construction of the R. E. Sessions Building was started. This is a multi-purpose building with kitchen and bathroom facilities. It is named in honor of Brother Raymond Sessions who along with his wife, Era, were charter members of the Church. |
